Poem: How Much?

How much?

Stops,
Looks,
Listens,

Go ask an elder!

Urban people,
With their urban eyes,
With their urban scrutiny,
Studies,

They've never been to the rez,
Don't know any Indians,
We say again,

Go ask an elder!

How much?

The dismemberment of our identity,
On your TV screen,
Never seen,
Never known,

Shows her arms,
Is this not enough,
She screams,

How much?

Shows his scars,
Emotional,
Spiritual,
Physical,
Points to bags under his own eyes,
Is this not enough?

How come?
Why can't?
You leave?
The rez?
Put your culture behind?
Why?

How much?

Standing alone shivering,
Jean jacket,
Hands cold,
Please see me,
Please see us.
