Poem: Gender Identity, Fierce

Identifying as a non-Mother means I'm denying my "womanhood,"
Thats funny,
My "womanhood,"
Eh and uh... I'm Two-Spirit,
Niizh Manidoowag,
I'm gender non-conforming,
There is a place for you in the world woman,

My gender identity was clearly defined,
Redefined and measured off in little measuring cups,
Mixed in,
Blended by,
And distorted by dominant culture ignorance,

There is a place for you in the world woman,
Derogatory as I am a "little woman,"

I wanna kick off my heels and put em' on when I feel like it,
I wanna sit in the back of my ole truck and tear cedar apart in the middle of da woods,
I wanna wear jeans and wipe paint on em',
I wanna eyeliner-it-up and show my eyes off,
For no impression,
No hollerin' at me,
Cuz I am Two-Spirit,
Niizh Manidoowag,
Ya hear,
I never give em' no time,
Ya got it?

The culture of the lack of understanding looks at me,
The culture of the lack of community looks at me,
Divvies and divides,
This is a very lonely road,
And there is much misunderstanding of who I am,
I've come to understand that I am,
Niizh Manidoowag,

I'm a woman,
I'm a woman,
I'm a woman,
Today I am a woman,
Tomorrow I feel my gender identity is this,

Just let me be me.
