Poem: 2 Blocks Up

We've walked these railroad tracks,
Taking note of graffiti on various bridges,
We might sit on the rail and think,
Mirage in the distance on a hot summer day,

A light in the distance,
The train is a coming,
The buzz of the street light,
But we've gotta go home,

There was Mad Season,
There was Mother Love Bone,
There was grunge,
Who knew this was a place of open mindedness and tolerance,

I'll run down the street,
Pride parades,
Drag queens,
Out and proud,
A gay and lesbian book store,
Chosen Books,
A gay shop owner,
"I'll buy these rings,"
Openly gay and lesbian couples,
Hand in hand,

I'll run down the street,
Nerd,
Dork,
Goth,
Flamboyant,
Rainbow stickers plastered on our journals,
Divine was an idol,

Some never get to idolize,
Feel and see this,
Some born into torment and shame,
Who knew this was a place of open mindedness and tolerance,
I put my hands up,
Wave those closed minds away.
