Native Quote of the Week

"You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round . . . The sky is round, and I have heard that the Earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours . . . . Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a person is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves." -Black Elk-Oglala Lakota Medicine Man

this speaks so loudly and clearly to me. It speaks to a way of knowing that is so wise and magickal to me. The Western European world, for all of it's technology and scientific method that we prize so dearly to gain knowlege, thought for so long that the world was flat! And were even so illogical as to burn people for saying different. What does this say about our Western ancestors and how they viewed knowledge?

Yet ancient, Earth centered people knew that the world was round. Without any "technology." How did they gain that knowledge?

I'm reminded of a story about a Spanish priest who gave an Incan chief the bible and said, "This is the word of God."

The chief held it to his ear and then threw it on the ground. "What kind of God does not speak?" he said to the priest in disgust.

Sometimes I feel like I can almost hear what they heard, now I am reminded to keep listening.

Robin - I agree with what you say 100%. The Earth - Akki - is always speaking. This is why I too get annoyed with the idea that "God" is in a church or only in a book. When that church is confining the Creator and the Spirit of all that is into a box. On the contrary some people do like the church/temple/mosque as a place for communion with others. I respect that for them and their path. But, I don't like how Christianization has and does get pushed on everyone in this society. Still it is forcefully put on others by ways of missions.

We can always listen to the Earth no matter where we are at. I always feel like as we evolve as humans we will return to our source and her wisdom - Akki.

Boozhoo,
This is a common teaching to all indigenous of Turtle Island. Our elder's tell us not to write anything down because then it becomes law. This is indoctrination and it disconnects the mind from the spirit disabling the ability to go beyond words and discourages free thinking as well as stagnates or oppresses change because in all life there is change or evolution. A circle is continuous and with out end. We have a spiritual eye that is blinded by a book written or a shiny coin there is no life in these things. YOU CAN NOT STOP THAT WHICH IS NATURAL WITH LEVEE'S AND LAW. Spirituality is a communication amongst human beings and that circle of life which is real, we are taught that we all have equal value and purpose.
